This afternoon, I was cleaning out some old photos and images that I had saved on my computer, and ran across this image of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks." I have never quite been able to put my finger on what it is, but there's something about this painting that has always appealed to me -- late night in the big city, the somewhat film noir feel to it, the era of the 1940s when this was first put on canvas.
So, for this entry, I'm simply putting this out there for you to look at and see what images and thoughts come to your mind.

It has always been a favorite of mine too...very Mickey Spillane feeling. I like making up stories about the people.
I like the image. But, I really can't say why. When I analyze it I can't come up with anything that makes sense. The guy at the counter looks lonely and the street looks WAY too clean. But, it has a nice kind of solitude to it.
If it was black and white it would remind me of Pleasantville :)
I am just glad there is a place open at that time of night to get service because obviously if you are still up you really NEED it!! :-)
Whenever someone mentions film noir, I remember the antics of Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie on "Whose Line is it Anway?" Ah, Dashiell Hammett - where are you now? And then there's Citizen Kane - what a classic!! "Come back, Kane..." (shades of Shane! Ha ha!)
It makes me think of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. But I don't know why.
I love Hopper too. they seem kinda lonely but with some kind of common comadarie.
I love Hopper and that painting. Someplace warm and welcoming to be..away from the isolation and loneliness.
